Our first adventure starts 2 months after we started dating. Evan's family took us on a trip down to Gulf Shores, about two hours from where I grew up as a young kid. We stayed at The Caribe Hotel in Orange Beach. Even though it was Spring Break, the water was super cold! We spent a lot of time walking up and down the shore searching for seashells and playing card games with the family. One of our favorite places to eat was the Shrimp Basket. We visited many of the shops and went to the outlet mall. Evan took the entire trip to pick out a new pair of sunglasses.
We went to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Foley (about 20 minutes north of Gulf Shores). This zoo was such an amazing experience for such a small zoo! The animals all looked so happy and well cared for. The bear was sitting next to the fence and was smiling the entire time. We got to hold and pet baby kangaroos! They also had an event to hold baby tigers, but it was sold out well in advance. They even had a liger swimming in a big metal tub. There was a giant alligator named Chucky. Years later after a hurricane, some of the cages were destroyed, but Chucky stayed put! He knew he had it made by staying there! Several years later, Evan and I visited this zoo again after some remodeling and expansion. The zoo was very new and nice looking, but it was more spread out and it just didn't have the same "personal" feel as it did with our first visit.
During our drive back from Foley, I saw a Volkswagen Beetle and punched Evan in the arm. His parents were completely shocked that I hit their son. Haha! They had never heard of the "punch bug" game! Needless to say, this became our new obsession for the rest of the trip! Nobody was safe!
We had such an amazing time getting to know one another in new ways and spending time as a family!
